The Yankees pounded out 12 hits ( four for extra bases), but fell just short of a win. Sheffield continued his hot hitting with three hits; he is now batting .344. Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter, and Hideki Matsui all had two hits each.

Chien Ming Wang struggled, giving up all six runs in just 5 and a third innings pitched; Wang picked up his first loss of the season.

In the bottom of the ninth, two runners were on (Jeter walked and Sheffield singled) with just one out. Alex Rodriguez struck out swinging for the second time in the game (he also hit into a double play). Jason Giambi then drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Hideki Matsui got up and worked the count full, but struck out looking at a pitch on the outside corner of the plate.
